Simpsons movie!
So, I realized that the Simpsons movie comes out the 27th — which, regardless of what I told my civilian boss, I will not be in another state for.
You’re god damned right I’m going to see it.

I wrote a few Javascript functions to streamline loading stuff in the sidebar (basically the same way the tagboard does it, but less bloated), then realized there’s nothing really to load, except for Google ads, which don’t seem to appreciate loading that way (I haven’t looked at it, but I assume it doesn’t want to get loaded without a referrer or via createXMLHttpRequest() or something).
D’oh!
Anyway, starting within the next week, I’m more or less unplugged for a month of annual training. (One of the more fun parts of being a Marine: getting paid to blow stuff up.) I may still have access to a phone, or I may be busy for 28 straight days. I dunno. I’ll probably update once or twice more before I head out.
(Edit: Yes, it’s supposed to be two weeks. I volunteered for extra duty because of my billet(s) — and because I have a lot more fun being a Marine than a civilian.)

I saw this CNN story and immediately thought of Vissago.
Edit: You can reload AT4 shells. It’s not recommended because they tend to blow up.

Newer versions of Wordpress have integrated widget functionality. (Meh.) At the moment, it’s a bit easier just to hard code everything, but I’ll probably end up twisting my own arm to implement it in my theme.
Also, when I was playing around with the collapsible menus on the sidebar, I got to thinking: is there a rule in Adsense’s TOS about loading the ads, but loading them invisibly (so they’re only displayed if the user wants them there)? I read through the TOS a couple times, but I didn’t see anything. I’ll probably just do some randomness with AJAX so it doesn’t load unless it’s going to be displayed.

After a bit of fooling around and some help from the Gentoo wiki, I hacked together a system to lock my $DISPLAY when I walk away from the terminal and unlock it when I return by detecting whether my cell phone is in the area or not.
The Gentoo Wiki recommended using hcitool, but I use l2ping, because it returns faster. It’d also be nice if there was a way to unlock a locked $DISPLAY without entering a password and without killing xscreensaver, but, eh, what can you do.
Code is coming.

1. Go to the Simpsons movie site.
2. Click on “Tour Springfield”, then “Moe’s Tavern”.
3. Above the sleeping Barney, click the “3 Card Moe” sign.
4. Marvel at what I do with the vast amounts of free time I have.

Me and Girlface went to the San Diego County Fair.
Turns out their “salute to heroes” is getting them in the door and overcharging for everything. Oh, and there was a planter with a plaque that said “thank you”.
